If you use a system with an internal, self calibrating oximeter how on earth could you do an external calibration? It used to be necessary to calibrate the internal functions of the oximeter itself by placing a calibration stick in the sensor and setting what the reading should be (1988 Biox II Oximeter). Now, discrete oximeters have their own internal calibrations that when they fail will shut them down until repaired.

CPAP calibrations? One usually titrates from a pressure manometer of some type, right? Any numbers on or near knobs are only for reference.

Previous posts have made comments about poorly trained techs doing or not doing calibrations. Should we all get behind our professional organizations (APT & AASM & BRPT) to give them some "teeth"? They could establish standards and raise up our profession. See my rant under the careers at risk posts.
