I think it comes down to many variables. Are you willing to move for a management position? Do you possess the qualities that is needed to be a manager? i.e. are you a leader? are you respected by your peers?

and ummm... I hate to say it but I've seen many people get ahead by so called "kissing b_tt" and saying what upper management or interviewers want to hear. Personally, I'm not good at that so I may be a night tech for a very long time :(
