I assume you are referring to a UPPP. The soft palate (to which your uvula is attached [that thingy hanging down in the middle of the back of your throat])assists in directing food and liquid flow down to your esophagus (food pipe). Once this is removed (to decrease snoring or try and control sleep apnea) it is possible food, and more likely liquids will go North instead of South. However, it is probably more likely if you happen to hiccup or laugh while trying to swallow something (most of us have experienced this at some point or another). It is more likely with the surgery. By the way, if you are getting a UPPP (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) did you know research shows it is about 90% effective for snoring and between 20-60% (often cited as 40%) effective for sleep apnea?
