"Pnea" is the Greek word for breath. The letter "a" means without. "Hypo" means under (e.g. a hypodermic needle goes under the skin). Thus Apnea means without breath and hypopnea means under a normal breath. Hypopneas are usually considered to be 50% or less of a normal breath. Virtually everyone has an apnea or hypopnea event in the night It is the frequency and duration of these that become problematic. Less than 5 events per hour is normal and less than ten seconds is usually insignificant. So if you take a string of half breaths for 27 seconds you are having a long duration of hypopnea (which is not normal breathing).
