As a technologist working in the field for the last 13 years I have seen literally thousands of poeple try CPAP and hundreds try surjury. Each definately has advantages and if the sleep lab you talked to didn't give you more info than you've posted in your message, then they are doing you no favors! Check with the American Sleep Apnea Association for more info. They are a patient info group for people with sleep apnea and are not tied to any one treatment. Sure they'll tell you about CPAP because it is widely regarded as the best of all the options. This doesn't mean that there are not other options. Also, I've seen several patients in the last two months who could't wear traditional nasal CPAP because they could not breathe through the nose suddenly be able to tolerate CPAP with no problem at all due to a new product that covers the nose and mouth and lets a person get CPAP even when mouth breathing. Many other treatment failures have been caused by poorly fitted nosepieces. I've seen many homecare and sleep technicians fit patients with masks that were so big that there was no way to get a good seal! Have you tried consulting again with your CPAP PROVIDER for assistence with leaks, runny nose, claustrophobia, dry mouth etc? If not DO SO NOW!
