Although I am not a clinician or physician, I work in a psychiatric hospital and have observed much. I also am norcoleptic, eplileptic, GERD, Delayed Sleep Awake Arousal Disorder. Not to mention that I too have a nephew who was diagnosed as ADD when young, have a sister which a rare from of musuclar dystryphy, and a brother and father who both (in addition to myself) have severe debilitating headaches of unknown origin. Since narcolepsy affects you sleep/awake cycle, your alertness, and capabilities to perform at times, it would not be unusal for a person to be diagnosed as ADD. Some literature research material refer to narcolepsy as a form of ADD, however, it would be best to know what, if anything particular, is causing the attention deficit, in your family's case narcolepsy. Also since narcolepsy is a chemical imbalance in the brain affecting the sleep/wake cycle (serotonin and dopamine), it is normal for it to affect a person's depressive states and frequently be diagnosed with major depression. Sleep disruption patterns are a well known to frequently cause depression, & difficulty paying attention. Bipolar persons have a chemical imbalance also and are usually treated with Lithium. They also have major depression, sleep disruptions, and difficulty in maintaining attention. It would appear (since I am not an expert) that all of these are inter-related in that they each have an effect on one another yet remain separate diagnos(es). There is a possibility of misdiagnosis, but also of having several at the same time. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors with your family. I am still looking for answers and means of assisting myself, my family, my co-workers, and others with disAbilities. Good luck. BRaymond
