I recently experienced exactly what you are talking about, and it was incredibly scary. You aren't completely sure if you are awake or asleep, but no matter how hard you try you cannot move. I went and saw my family doctor about this, who reffered me to a sleep specialist, who confirmed I had experienced sleep paralyisis, and after a night in a sleep lab, diagnosed me as being narcoleptic. The one thing he did suggest to try and combat the sleep paralysis, is to concentrate on one portion of your body (such as a finger) and try to move it. This will be difficult at first, but then gradually should allow you to completely wake up
