White noise machine to drown out outside noise?

Hi,
I hope I'm posting this in an appropriate place.
I have heard of white noise machines that play nice sounds
like rain or waterfall noises to drown out traffic noise, etc
so you can sleep better. I have never seen one of these
(yet) and I was wondering if a) anyone has used one and
if so, does it really help, and b) brand name(s) so I
have a starting point for my search.
