Dear Janet,
You did not say how old the girl is in your novel. Small children have a hard time differentiating dreams from reality. Literally, they'll have a fantastic dream and tell you about it with full belief that it really happened. Their is a fair amount of literature on this topic in Developmental Psychology and Memory Psychology.
