There are very few drugs that affect sleep that do not have a long term effect. You should only use any sleeping aid when you really need it, not on a nightly basis. Tolerances are built up quickly and some drugs that at first helped you sleep will keep you awake. Insomnia is one of the most difficult sleep disorders to treat. Many treatments that do work do not involve any drugs. I would give these another chance. Sleep hygiene is just one. The various treatments are too numerous to list here but a good sleep doc can mold a treatment specifically for you problem. There are some good insomnia sites on the Sleep Links page but I do believe a consult with a sleep specialist is in order.
