Your problem could be due to a difficulty breathing. Insomnia is one complaint some people have who have sleep apnea. Most sedatives make it worse so you may think you slept longer but the quality of the sleep you get is much less that when not taking alcohol or other sedatives. If there is no sleep lab (where are you) then you may ask a friend or a relative to sit in your room or come in from time to time during the night to watch and listen to your breathing. Does it sound labored, are there pauses between breaths, do you snore, do you sweat, do you move around a lot. If you have a sleep disorder related to breathing you should see a physician who knows something about sleep disorders. I would stay away from melatonin. The long term effects and the research is not in. I has very little effect on making you sleep. Valerian root is a natural substance found in most health food stores and is a muscle relaxant. Again if you have a breathing problem in sleep muscle relaxers with make it worse. You should see a physician who knows something about sleep disorders.
