My wife suffered several of your friends symptoms
and was eventually found to have an Acoustic
Neuroma (benign growth on the acoustic nerve in
her inner ear). Has since been operated on for
this condition and is doing fairly well. The
operation is very delicate and rather complicated.
Not to be done at your local county hospital!!
The neuroma was discovered when her ENT sent her
for and enhanced MRI, or with a dye enjected before
the procedure. Good luck and check the Acoustic
