: I've finally determined my 3-4 years of increasing severe and painful headaches are associated with what may be sleep apnea since they all occur in the mornings when I awaken and other causes such as sinusitis and hypoglycemia have been ruled out. I also finally remembered that for about the same amount of time I've been waking abruptly at various points during the night gasping and coughing...particularly when I first go to sleep. I have a sleep study scheduled next week, thanks to a great family nurse practitioner. My question is, what can I do to get rid of these painful headaches, or better yet prevent them from happening between now and being diagnosed/treated with a CPAP or BIPAP? Usual analgesics sometimes do not work and it can take 2-6 hours before the intense headache lessens. Does it help to prop up on 3-4 pillows and try to sleep sitting up? Help!

Yes body position can help with Apnea. Usually the worst position to sleep in is your back. Right or left side is usually better. Sitting up in a lounge type chair or if you have the foam wedgies that you can use in bed could also help some. Be careful about using alot of pillows because it could cause you to have more of a bend in your neck making the obstruction worse.

Good luck, Cobi
