: My fiance does a very odd thing when he sleeps. He takes a deep breath and then seems to hold it. After a few seconds he begins to let it out very slowly for a few more seconds and then he finally exhales quickly just before taking another deep breath. Then the pattern repeats. He sounds like a leaky beach ball during the times when he's exhaling slowly. He doesn't seem to be aware of this breathing pattern and he claims it hasn't affected him physically when he's awake. Is this normal or could it be a sign of a sleep disorder?

To answer your question plain and simple : No this respiratory pattern would not be considered as normal, and may be a sign of a sleep disorder or some neurological disorder. I suggest you have him see a sleep professional.
